The Wirral Employment Corridor
"The Wirral Employment Corridor" is the name given to the employment area stretching along the Mersey waterfront from New Brighton to Eastham and incorporating the Docklands, Birkenhead town centre, Lairdside, and the Wirral International Business Park at Bromborough. This Corridor is the economic heart of Wirral and represents the greatest opportunity for strengthening the local economy and increasing employment.
A key focus of Wirral Waterfront was to encourage Wirral's entrepreneurs to develop their skills and increase the competitiveness of the local economy. This has been done by providing targeted support to new businesses in high growth sectors such as tourism and lifestyle industries, including advice to businesses on how to use information and communication technology to boost their performance.
Wirral Waterfront introduced investment into a number of key employment sites within the Employment Corridor, including boosting the tourism potential of New Brighton, exploiting the growth of the Marine sector, enhancing Birkenhead Town Centre's role as Wirral's main retail and commercial centre, and continuing the development of Wirral's two main strategic sites at Wirral International Business Park and Twelve Quays.
The development of the Employment Corridor also included a number of exciting projects to regenerate the physical and natural environment. These include:
- Investing in public transport and establishing "green commuting" opportunities
- Encouraging residents and businesses to recycle their waste by developing new uses for waste products such as furniture, electrical goods and computers
- Enhancing key gateway corridors such as the approaches into Birkenhead town centre
- Improving the "green lungs" and open spaces within the Corridor, including the restoration of Birkenhead Park.
