As The Independent newspaper asked:
"Was this the finest Open in living memory?"
Royal Liverpool Golf Club is just one of Wirral's outstanding golf courses. The peninsula has 14 courses suitable for all ages and ability and is preparing to welcome the world's best golfers over the next three years as it plays host to The Ricoh Women's British Open in 2012, The Boys Amateur Championship in 2013 and The Open Championship in 2014.
David Hill, The R&A's Director of Championships (organising body) said:
"We are delighted that The Open is returning to Royal Liverpool after a relatively short period of time. In 2006, Hoylake showcased links golf at its best and players, spectators and officials were united in their praise for the course, and for the venue as a whole."
Wirral also hosts its own annual four course, 72 hole amateur golf tournament - The Wirral Golf Classic - in which entrants get to follow in Tiger Woods' footsteps and play an Open venue.
